Susan Hunter summarises the exercise from the last meeting

Hello fellow WIB members,

Our last meeting at Nermans was a vibrant event and after your request for more information on the Red, Yellow, Blue, Green exercise I am pleased to share the summary with you. I am sure that a lot of you have already identified what personality type your business colleagues or family fit in to and as I explained to you at the meeting, it can highlight why you get on with some people better than others and also gives you the tools to see how you can turn a situation around by altering the language and approach you use to create a WIN WIN outcome at all times.

So here’s the summary of the four types:

The Activist Socialiser – Yellow

The Activist/Socialisers want to have fun. They are outgoing, animated, and creative. They like people and make friends easily. They are talkative and they know lots of people. They make decisions very quickly, often on gut reaction. They are enthusiastic and easy going, fast-paced and excitable. However, they can be impulsive, disorganised and impatient. They are not strong finishers because they get bored easily. They have kangaroo brains and skip from subject to subject and go off the point. They dislike detail. They always want to see the big picture and have huge visions. They communicate verbally and visually. They like pictures, brightness and colour. They love the phone, chat for ages and speak with a smile. When they talk they are very honest and open giving lots of information. Possible careers are in sales, or TV / radio. They are presenters, trainers, and telesales people. In large corporations you will often find whole marketing, sales and PR departments are full of these. If this is the case you will easily find where they sit, as their department is full of sound and colour! Who do you know who may be a YELLOW?

The Logical Thinker - Blue

The thinkers want to get it right first time! They are very organised with great attention to detail; tend to be serious and formal, perfectionists. They want to know “why” all the time. While they are busy internalising and processing information they can appear unfriendly, insular but this is just their way of working things through methodically. They can be critical, slow to react, get bogged down in details and they will always notice what s wrong or what s missing. Can get easily stressed. Possible careers are accountants and actuaries, tax specialists, scientists. Thinkers tend to communicate in the written format, especially emails or long reports. They like the facts and the full details presented logically. Often their reports have numerous appendices. They also like to receive things written down. Thinkers are at home in quiet surroundings such as libraries and alone in offices with the door shut. Who do you know who may be a BLUE?

The Relater - Green

The Relaters are very people focussed, consensus seekers; they want to be friends with you and care for you. They are supportive, reliable, easygoing, loyal, great team players. They always want to co-operate and appear friendly and warm. They avoid conflict and risk. They can be slow to get started, they are followers rather than leaders and they try to please everyone. They can be very passive and quiet. Possible careers are in personnel, counselling, possibly teaching, and these people work for the Samaritans. These people like to be of service. Relaters communicate verbally. They pay great attention to body language and they need to see your face and eyes. They need to understand the inner person and they want to know the emotion of your actions. They generally want to build trust and gain information from depth of relationship. They are a great asset to any team. They are the glue that will hold it together in a crisis.Who do you know who may be a GREEN?

The Director Driver - Red

These people want it DONE, and they want it done NOW!They are the most assertive, verging on aggressive sometimes and are action driven. They make decisions quickly and are practical and self motivated. They love a challenge and are very straightforward to deal with. They feel important, they are often self-opinionated and they delegate well. They can be appear blunt and tactless especially to greens and blues. They see life very much as black and white, they can be too quick off the mark, they always think they're right and they are impatient – often putting processes before people.Possible careers are in management or as a union representative.. They tend to be entrepreneurs, and they have their own businesses. Drivers like things written down as long as it's brief. They like bullet points and e-mails. It has to be concise and you need to provide the answer to any problem presented. Drivers like to go first and they like to initiate. Drivers are not celebrated for their listening skills but are great to have around in a disaster.Who do you know who may be a RED?
