Refresh your Interiors for Christmas - Tips from Vida Interiors

With the festive season just a round the corner, here are some tips from WIBS member Ludmila Fowler on how to refresh your Interiors giving them a more spacious and airy feeling.

1. Serious de-cluttering and a good clean will re-energise your space and make it a great place in which to live. De-cluttering includes reduction of books, magazines, ornaments, unused toys and games….the list might go on & on. Try to review your space regularly & try to see your home through someone else’s eyes.

2. Reducing your personal possessions by a third, (all our belongings accumulated during a long period of time loose their importance). Sometimes we don’t even remember what we have. Start with something small like a corner or shelf, and keep to one room at a time

3. Small decorative baskets are great for keeping packets together, especially in a display cabinet or on console table.

4. Think about why you are keeping things

5. Bathrooms get cluttered easily. Offers such as “three-for-two” give you spare products and extra clutter.

You will be amazed that with such small changes, at no cost, the space and airy feeling that you will gain will substantially improve the look of your Interiors.

Find your consulate or embassy on the Costa del Sol

It can be hard to know where to look for help when you're abroad. AngloInfo is a fantastic resource for expats living in Spain and has recently contacted us with their list of consulates and embassies - very handy if you need to know about passports, paperwork or legal issues.

Wherever you're from originally, it can be helpful to know about the people who can represent you here in Spain. Practically all countries of the world have officials working in their embassies (which exist to represent the country), and in consular services, which are able to help the countries' visiting and resident nationals.

Have a look in The AngloFILE directory of local English-speaking businesses and services for the relevant contact information in the category Consulates & Embassies.

New kids activity website launched

We have been informed about a new website called Kidsinmarbella.com, which has been put together by two Mums on the Costa del Sol who want to share their knowledge and experiences with other families. The website provides a wide range of information on activities and ideas on how to keep your kids entertained, in both English and Spanish. You can also have your say, as they would like to hear from parents who have recommendations for their favorite places to go. The activities range from child friendly beaches, places to eat to local parks, playgrounds and sporting activities, as well as the usual big attractions you would expect to see. Visit http://www.kidsinmarbella.com/ to find out more.

Member's Profile: Susana Serrano Davy, Rose & Clavel Accountants

Company:
Rose & Clavel is a bilingual firm of Chartered Accountants based in Marbella. We provide traditional accountancy services as well as innovative business solutions in a new kind of way. We are a member firm of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). We offer a variety of services to both individuals and companies.

What makes your business special?
I used to work at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in the UK and also within the Spanish accountancy environment for several years. I am one of the very few Spanish-Nationals to possess a Chartered Accountancy qualification from the UK and who understands both systems so well. Our team is made up of people who come from different backgrounds and have lived and worked both in Spain and the UK. The diversity of our people allows us to understand our clients, their business and their expectations regardless of whether they are Spanish or British.

Likes and Dislikes:
I like “getting things done” and dislike “excuses” not to get things done.

Top business tip:
Always take the opportunity to meet new people; you never know what may come from that connection.

Why you love living in Spain:
It is my home country; I like Marbella particularly because I can enjoy living in the sunshine whilst living and working UK style. I lived in England for many years and I enjoy being able to pick and mix the things I like most about both cultures.

Visit Rose & Clavel

Member's Profile: Susan Hunter, Susan Hunter Consultancy

Company:
Susan Hunter Consultancy. I work as an intuitive consultant helping businesses and individuals to achieve great success in their lives. I have had my own business since 1992 and worked for a wide range of organizations – from multinationals (Shell/Nike/T-Mobile) to UK Government (Health & Safety Executive) to small businesses and individuals.

What makes your business special?
With my background in corporate and a wide range of other areas (NLP/Time Line Therapy, Feng Shui, alternatives/healing, writing) you get access to a wide range of skills at this ‘one stop shop’. Working intuitively also gives me the edge to get to the root of problems quickly.

Likes and Dislikes:
I love the buzz of working with great enthusiastic people, especially those that exude positivity and want to have fun doing so! I hate negative people, who feel the world owes them a living: I say just get on with it!

Top networking/business tip:
What you put your focus on is what you’ll get … So if you think a business meeting might be difficult and you won’t get the business it’s highly likely that it will be true! So, be positive; do your research on the client (if new) and overall the 5Ps – prior preparation prevents poor performance: so rehearse and be prepared to win that business! You can do it.

Why you love living in Spain:
Lifestyle, sun, fun and to be close to the sea and the mountains and to be surrounded by (generally!) likeminded fun individuals.

Any special offer for WIBS members?
Free half hour consultancy meeting.

Member's Profile: Georgina Shaw, Shaw Marketing Services.

Company:
Shaw Marketing Services, PR and Marketing company.

What makes your business special?
I am offering small and medium sized companies a cost-effective way to promote themselves locally and internationally. I worked in a London Marketing Agency for several years and so I can offer a full range of marketing approaches. I use techniques such as branding, leaflets, public relations, advertising, events and email marketing in order to tell
the world about my clients’ products or services in the most appropriate way for them.

Likes and Dislikes:
I like positive proactive people and sunny Spain, I dislike rain, negative people and ironing!

Top business tips:
Be organised! I am an obsessive list maker and find it really helps me to stay on top of things and meet deadlines. Once you stop being organised then productivity and efficiency go out of the window.

Why you love living in Spain:
I don’t know why so many people are down on Spain, I think it’s an amazing place. I love the food, the language, the people and of course the climate. I think the Costa del Sol is a great place to mix business with pleasure.

Any special offer for WIBS members?
I am happy to offer WIB Members a free 15 minute marketing consultation by phone to brainstorm ideas about how they are currently promoting themselves, what their strengths and weaknesses are and how they could get more out of their

Tips for reducing your monthly mortgage repayments from HomeCareontheWeb

Given the current economic climate, many people are trying to reduce their monthly Spanish mortgage repayments.

Well, it seems good news is here at last. Apparently, the banks have started lending again, and thanks to various offers they currently have available, re-mortgaging your Spanish property can now be less expensive and make a significant difference to monthly outgoings.

The benefits of re-mortgaging*

• Get your fees paid by the lender
• Increase the term of your loan
• Take advantage of interest only periods, with fixed rates

You can also benefit from rates as low as the monthly Euribor (currently standing at 0.09%) plus 1.6%, which would give you an interest rate of 2.5%**. Some owners have found that by re-mortgaging, their monthly payments have been reduced by as much as 55%.

For those who rent out their property, this has the added benefit of either:

• Lowering their monthly costs, thus giving them more flexibility and a greater competitive edge regarding the rental rates they charge; or
• Dramatically improving the profitability of their rentals.

*Mortgages are subject to status.

Something Cakey!

SomethingCakey makes edible cake toppers for all occasions. Choose from any photo or picture and add your own personalised message. We think these are a great little product, especially here in Spain where the choice of novelty cakes readily available in the supermarkets is practically non existent!

At prices starting from only 3 euros, these really are a great credit crunching idea for any birthday party or event since they don't hit the pocket too hard but really do look fantastic and taste great too.

Take a look at their website http://www.somethingcakey.com/ , email Nicky on nicky@somethingcakey.com or call 616399382 for more information

Dual language site for Spanish/English language learners

Storyflip is a free resource for Spanish who are learning English, and English who are learning Spanish. Its aim (with the help of volunteer readers,) is to help you learn to understand the language as it is spoken through the use of dual language audio-text.

The short stories, articles, phrases, jokes and vocabulary with audio, are written in English and in Spanish , in this way you can listen to the text being read out clearly by a native speaker whilst reading the text, helping you quickly develop an ear for the language you are learning.

They need volunteers who can speak clearly - native of Britain or America, to record themselves reading the English texts on the pages and send them to the site, so that they can be added. An accent doesn´t matter, because the same texts can be listened to in different accents. If you would like to help, please email your mp3 readings to info@storyflip.com

Great tax news for holiday home owners in Spain...

Alistair Darling may not have wanted to draw too much attention to it, but there was some positive news for owners of holiday homes in Spain that was buried away in the small print of his most recent Budget - and we thought you'd like to know about it!

The Budget stated that Britons with an unprofitable holiday home in an EU country outside of the UK (such as Spain) are now able to offset losses on their property against their earned income.

Until now, no Spanish holiday home owners have been able to do this, but HM Revenues and Customs have at last admitted this discrepancy may have been unlawful, and are therefore allowing owners to offset losses going back 5 years.

However, you must act fast, as this tax break will be banned completely by the UK government in April 2010.

Apparently you'll be eligible to claim back your losses if you've had your property available to rent out for more than 140 days of the year, and have actually achieved 70 days worth of rentals in that year.

If you feel this situation directly affects you, and would like more information about it, we would urge you to contact your UK accountant or financial advisor.
