Charity Production by The International Theatre Studio

For over 20 years The International Theatre Studio has performed in the open air a summer production in aid of a charity. This year they are going to Benahavis to the new Parque Torre Leonera, with the support of The Residents Department of the Ayuntamiento de Benahavis. This is a new and beautiful park with a stage and auditorium, very attractive gardens with a lake and waterfall.

With the proceeds going to CUDECA to help with their hospice, the production is called “FUN in the PARK”, an evening of entertainment. It takes place on Sunday 19th September at 6.30 pm. The first half will be a mixture of music and comedy and then there will be the traditional long interval as the audience is asked to bring with them a picnic to enjoy sitting in the gardens. Then the second half is a comedy play called “Day Trippers” directed by Kate Jackson.

A bar is available before the start, during the interval and after the play. Tickets are €12 and can be obtained from Bookworld Espana (San Pedro and Guadalmina), Costa Cards in Benavista and Longmans Bookshop Estepona or at the door.

Just a warning! The seats are rather hard so you are recommended to bring a cushion

Please come and not only have an enjoyable evening but also contribute to the needs of Cudeca. Further information from 952 81 21 51 or 686 03 13 60

Dental radio seminar 28/07/10

Dear Fellow members of the Women In Business Network,

I thought you might be interested to know that I will be doing a radio seminar on Talk Radio Europe, this Wednesday, July 28th at 5:30 pm.

Why not take this opportunity to tune in and learn more about this topic or better yet, to actively participate by telephone / email during the show.

Tune In to:
TALK RADIO EUROPE 88.9 and 91.9 FM at 5:30 pm
Telephone: 952-799-953

Recommended Guitarist Richard Waterborn

Our summer party last Friday was a great success and attended by over 50 women from all along the coast.

During the event, we were entertained by guitarist Richard Waterborn who played a wide range of beautiful music during the meal and also to accompany our fashion show. Richard is available for events and weddings and comes highly recommended by WIBS!

Here's a little more about him:

"I fell in love with the guitar at a tender age, listening to Burl Ives! Later I found a second hand LP of Narcisio Yepes and that was it. I was hooked- entranced by the magical sound of the Spanish guitar . I wore the record out, and still play most of the pieces from it in my repertoire. Growing up I explored other styles- rock, blues, folk: then moved to Ireland and immersed myself in traditional music, learning to play fiddle, mandolin and tin whistle. After many happy years playing in various groups I returned to the guitar, both as a traditional solo instrument and for accompanying singers.

In 1998 I moved to Spain and returned to my musical roots- the Spanish guitar. As well as the romantic Spanish repertoire of Tarrega, Granados, Albeniz etc I play a lot of Latin American music as well as arrangements of more contemporary songs, jazz classics, and Irish traditional."

To find out more or book Richard for an event visit his website http://www.richardwaterborn.com/music, email: rwaterborn@eircom.net or call 676346402

Charity gala in aid of street children 17/07/10

You are invited to attend the first charity event in aid of “Street-O” – the Charity raising money for Philippines’ street children. It is being held on Saturday 17th July at the Gran Hotel Guadalpin, Marbella and featuring great food and entertainment such as the legendary Mel Williams and Wow Factor finalist Becky Tate.

The charity, Street-0, www.streeto.org, was founded in Spain by Raymond Allon. This registered charity has ambitious plans to raise a much needed €750k in order to build communities and provide essential goods and supplies to the deprived “slum kids” who live in inhumane conditions on the streets of the Philippines.

“Our purpose is to raise funds and awareness of the conditions that these slum kids live in. Once you have seen the conditions they live in, it takes a hardened heart to not want to do something, anything, to make a difference in their lives” says Ray, President of StreetO,

Tickets are still available for tables of 10 people, at €100 per head.

If you would like to attend the Gala please contact Laura on 638677755 or email admin@streeto.org

They are also looking for raffle prizes or auction items, offers of sponsorship of the event or donations to the charity.

Important Women’s Health Information

Last weekend I went to the Calahonda Health and Beauty Fair and got talking to the team at Clinica Medicare. They told me about a programme funded by the Breast Cancer Charity Positively Pink registered charity no G92860477 to allow all British women over the age of 17 to get a free 3D breast screening between July and October 2010 here on the Coast. This sounds like a fantastic scheme which we should all take advantage of. All you have to do is go to the El Oceano Hotel on Tuesdays at 10am and you will get a ticket to be taken to the Xanit hospital which qualifies you for the free scan.

They also asked me to remind all our members of the importance of regular smear tests for all women who have ever been sexually active. Don’t put it off because you’re embarrassed, the examination only takes a few minutes and could save your life.

Did you know?

Annual smear tests reduce your risk of Cervical Cancer by 92%

In the UK alone it is estimated to save 1000 lives each year

80-90% of abnormalities are detected through regular smear tests, and can be treated early to Prevent Cancer

Make sure you take care of your health and act to prevent illness with these simple steps.

To find out more please contact Clinica Medicare on 952 83 57 76 or email David at info@clinicamedicare.com “Remember that early detection is your protection”

The Importance of Networking

At the last meeting I gave a short presentation about the importance of networking. Here’s an overview for those of you who missed it.

Why is networking important?
As a marketing consultant I recommend that all my clients use networking as one of their key marketing tools.

In my opinion networking:
- Raises awareness of you and your company
- Allows you access to experienced business people to ask advice and get practical support if you’re new to the area
- Builds a network of trusted suppliers who you can turn to
- Builds trust in you and therefore your business
- Gives you marketing opportunities to give speeches, publicise your business via their website or newsletters and of course meet new people at each and every meeting.
- Is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and build your social network in a new place

Networking Dos & Don’ts

Do:

- Be brave and go and say hello to the people around you
- Bring plenty of cards and marketing materials
- Think of a concise and accurate business description so when people ask you what you do you have an answer
- Listen to others and take the time to learn about their business
- Offer help to members for free or at a very low cost
- Take advantage of all the extra promotional opportunities the networking group offers like website etc.
- Be patient – networking takes time because it’s all about building positive and long-standing relationships

Don't:
- Be too shy to speak to people
- Just speak to the people you know
- Sell and push your business down people’s throat
- Get stuck talking to just one person the whole time, you’re here to meet lots of people and everyone understands that
- Be rude and constantly be looking around for someone better to talk to!
- Be critical of other members – it makes you look bad
- Forget to follow-up after the meeting – this is one of the most important elements

I hope this will help you to make the most of your networking opportunities. Please comment below if you think I have missed any important points. For more tips on Marketing your company, please visit the new Shaw Marketing Services blog to read my monthly Marketing Focus posts, as well as lots of ideas and suggestions.

Remember our next meeting is the WIB Summer Party on the first Friday in July at Laguna Village.

As a small business, finding the time to do what you need to be profitable is a real struggle, especially if you work on your own. Most of us try to juggle new business creation, networking, client management and admin with the actual process of doing the work and it can be a very stressfull task!

I've seen an excellent article about outsourcing and how it can help you to be profitable by Bernadette Doyle. She says you need to start by asking yourself the following questions:
"My business would make more money if I could do more of _______."

"I currently spend most of my time on ________."

This will help you identify what tasks should be outsourced effectively so you can find people to take this pressure off you. The article contains lots of useful advice about outsourcing in general click here to read it.

Please let us know if you have any tips or success stories about outsourcing.

Opportunity to be featured on MumAbroad

We've been contacted by Carrie Frais from website MumAbroad to ask us to take part in the new section of the website by agreeing to be interviewed about how they set up their business. Please read their email below and contact Carrie if you're interested in taking part.

Dear Women in Business

MumAbroad is a well established English-speaking website aimed at the International Community living in or relocating to Spain. For the past two years, it has concentrated on the areas of Catalunya, Madrid & the Costa Blanca and we are about to re-launch a brand new site incorporating the regions of the Balearics & Andalucia.

One of our most popular pages in our Mums in Business section http://www.mumabroad.com/interactive-mum-115/mums-in-business-2924/
and we were wondering whether some of your members would be interested in being featured here and whether any of them would be happy to be interviewed about how they set up and run their business. This is for entrepreneurs as opposed to employees.

Best wishes

Interesting case study into change management

I think it's important to look for advice and inspiration from people who have effectively managed a tricky situation, so I was interested to read Benita Cegarra's blog post on Ecademy entitled Business: It's good to talk.

She was brought in by a client to make sure an important project was on track and make sure it all went smoothly - not an easy thing to do! She admitted that the team were against her involvement at first as they thought she was a spy for the big boss, but together they implemented a programme of regular meetings with the whole team to air fears and problems with the project and expose pitfalls early enough to be able to solve them without derailing the project. She goes on to give suggestions on how you can make this work in your organisation - an interesting read for any business dealing with large deadline-dependent projects! Susan Hunter summarises the exercise from the last meeting

Hello fellow WIB members,

Our last meeting at Nermans was a vibrant event and after your request for more information on the Red, Yellow, Blue, Green exercise I am pleased to share the summary with you. I am sure that a lot of you have already identified what personality type your business colleagues or family fit in to and as I explained to you at the meeting, it can highlight why you get on with some people better than others and also gives you the tools to see how you can turn a situation around by altering the language and approach you use to create a WIN WIN outcome at all times.

So here’s the summary of the four types:

The Activist Socialiser – Yellow

The Activist/Socialisers want to have fun. They are outgoing, animated, and creative. They like people and make friends easily. They are talkative and they know lots of people. They make decisions very quickly, often on gut reaction. They are enthusiastic and easy going, fast-paced and excitable. However, they can be impulsive, disorganised and impatient. They are not strong finishers because they get bored easily. They have kangaroo brains and skip from subject to subject and go off the point. They dislike detail. They always want to see the big picture and have huge visions. They communicate verbally and visually. They like pictures, brightness and colour. They love the phone, chat for ages and speak with a smile. When they talk they are very honest and open giving lots of information. Possible careers are in sales, or TV / radio. They are presenters, trainers, and telesales people. In large corporations you will often find whole marketing, sales and PR departments are full of these. If this is the case you will easily find where they sit, as their department is full of sound and colour! Who do you know who may be a YELLOW?

The Logical Thinker - Blue

The thinkers want to get it right first time! They are very organised with great attention to detail; tend to be serious and formal, perfectionists. They want to know “why” all the time. While they are busy internalising and processing information they can appear unfriendly, insular but this is just their way of working things through methodically. They can be critical, slow to react, get bogged down in details and they will always notice what s wrong or what s missing. Can get easily stressed. Possible careers are accountants and actuaries, tax specialists, scientists. Thinkers tend to communicate in the written format, especially emails or long reports. They like the facts and the full details presented logically. Often their reports have numerous appendices. They also like to receive things written down. Thinkers are at home in quiet surroundings such as libraries and alone in offices with the door shut. Who do you know who may be a BLUE?

The Relater - Green

The Relaters are very people focussed, consensus seekers; they want to be friends with you and care for you. They are supportive, reliable, easygoing, loyal, great team players. They always want to co-operate and appear friendly and warm. They avoid conflict and risk. They can be slow to get started, they are followers rather than leaders and they try to please everyone. They can be very passive and quiet. Possible careers are in personnel, counselling, possibly teaching, and these people work for the Samaritans. These people like to be of service. Relaters communicate verbally. They pay great attention to body language and they need to see your face and eyes. They need to understand the inner person and they want to know the emotion of your actions. They generally want to build trust and gain information from depth of relationship. They are a great asset to any team. They are the glue that will hold it together in a crisis.Who do you know who may be a GREEN?

The Director Driver - Red

These people want it DONE, and they want it done NOW!They are the most assertive, verging on aggressive sometimes and are action driven. They make decisions quickly and are practical and self motivated. They love a challenge and are very straightforward to deal with. They feel important, they are often self-opinionated and they delegate well. They can be appear blunt and tactless especially to greens and blues. They see life very much as black and white, they can be too quick off the mark, they always think they're right and they are impatient – often putting processes before people.Possible careers are in management or as a union representative.. They tend to be entrepreneurs, and they have their own businesses. Drivers like things written down as long as it's brief. They like bullet points and e-mails. It has to be concise and you need to provide the answer to any problem presented. Drivers like to go first and they like to initiate. Drivers are not celebrated for their listening skills but are great to have around in a disaster.Who do you know who may be a RED?

Overcome "learned helplessness" and become a success

I've been sent an interesting article about Learned Helplessness which I thought would be useful for the WIB members. This is the idea that what often holds us back from achieving success and making money is that we have developed the belief that no matter how hard we work and how much education we get, we will never get out of the financial and personal straight-jacket we're in. This makes us give up and not try to achieve goals which are within our reach.

If that sounds familiar, read this article which offers useful solutions to breaking this negative cycle. The article suggests we:
Embrace change
Get perspective
Set goals
Achieve success
Consider a different viewpoint

Click here to read the article and become the successful woman you deserve to be!

Thanks to Anita for sending this article to me. If you come across any useful articles that you think will help or inspire our members please send them through to news@wibspain.com

Spain well represented the Moscow Golf & Luxury Property Show

The Spanish companies show of strength at the Golf and Luxury Property Show held in Moscow last week was a clear sign that the Russian community is becoming increasingly important to the economy of the Costa del Sol. More than 10 Spanish companies were represented amongst the 90 exhibitors all focused on the Golf and Real Estate sectors, both very important industries for the coast and Andalucia.

Over the past year a number of Russian focused businesses have opened and three new Russian language magazines have been launched. The number of Russian registered residents in Spain now tops over 190,000, with some 30,000 in Andalucia and it is a community that is set to continue to grow. Wealthy young Russian families have started to look to Europe as a place to settle and bring up their children. Schools, Colleges and the Real Estate companies have all seen a surge in enquires and registration from the growing numbers within Russian speaking community.

The Golf and Luxury Property Show is Moscow’s leading trade show within these sectors, “The synergy for Real Estate and Golf Tourism makes it ideal for a number of Spanish businesses” said the organizer Kim Waddoup “We are very pleased that so many Spanish businesses see the opportunity in the Russian market and want to promote Spain as a destination market for the Russian community”.

Marina Robertson, a Russian National and Director of Del Sol Packaged said “ The opportunity to meet the Golf Associations, Golf tour operators, Real Estate promoters and to feel the positive attitudes towards Spain has been very encouraging. There are so many opportunities to promote the Costa del Sol to the growing golfing community here. Golf tourism in Spain and the Real Estate sectors will undoubtedly benefit from attending this years show”

During the summer Del Sol Packaged will be hosting a number of delegations from Moscow as a result of the show, which will include media, golf course designers, golf club owners, players and a number of tour operators. This market provides huge opportunities for local businesses. For more information contact Simon Robertson at the DSP press office on +34 951 89 40 26, or email to pressoffice@delsolpackaged.com
